Where Thao Dien Drinks Coffee

A local's guide to the neighborhood's best cafes, from 6:30am openers to late-night pour-overs

The Neighborhood That Runs on Coffee

Thao Dien has a coffee problem. Or, depending on your perspective, a coffee solution. Within these few square kilometers of Thu Duc, there are over 140 places where you can get a caffeine fix. That's roughly one cafe for every 200 residents, which either tells you something about the real estate market or the collective sleep deficit of everyone who lives here.

What makes the coffee scene here different from the rest of Saigon isn't just the density. It's the range. You can get a 40,000 VND ca phe sua da from a proper shop at 6:30am, or an 85,000 VND single-origin pour-over at a place with Edison bulbs and a vinyl collection. Both are within walking distance of each other, and both are good.

Here's where to find what you're looking for.

The Early Birds

XLIII Specialty Coffee

There's no getting around this one. XLIII (that's "43" in Roman numerals, and yes, everyone gets confused the first time) has a perfect 5.0 from nearly three thousand Google reviews. At a time when everyone's rating gets dragged down by the occasional one-star grudge review, maintaining a perfect score from that many people is borderline miraculous.

They're in the Bao Chi village area, which makes them one of the go-to specialty shops in the neighborhood. The space is small and clean, leaning into that third-wave minimalism without feeling sterile. The baristas know what they're doing with espresso, but the pour-over menu is where things get interesting. They rotate single-origin beans and will talk you through tasting notes without making you feel like you're sitting an exam.

If you only visit one coffee shop in Thao Dien, this should probably be it.

Hue Cafe Roastery

You'll smell Hue before you see it. They roast on-site on Xuan Thuy, and the aroma drifts halfway down the block. They lean toward medium roasts that let the origin character come through, which makes them a good counterpoint to the darker roasting tradition you'll find at most Vietnamese-style cafes.

The space has an almost academic quality to it. There are usually a few laptops open, but it doesn't feel like a coworking space. More like a library where everyone's silently agreeing that the coffee is excellent. Good place to bring a book and lose a morning.

Dolphy Cafe

Dolphy has three locations around Thao Dien. The original on Nguyen Van Huong is the most established. The one on Duong Van An is larger and busier. There's a newer, smaller spot on Thao Dien street that's still flying under the radar.

The vibe is distinctly local. Vietnamese-style coffee done well, with the kind of relaxed atmosphere that signals you're not paying for interior design. The ca phe sua da here is thick, sweet, and strong enough to rearrange your morning. If you want to drink coffee the way the neighborhood actually drinks coffee most days, Dolphy is a good place to start.

Bagel Brothers

Yes, it's a bagel shop. But the coffee at Bagel Brothers is a genuine surprise. They roast their own Ethiopian beans in-house and pull a Melbourne-style latte that would hold its own in Fitzroy. The Vietnamese iced milk coffee is strong, properly sweetened, and one of the best in the area. They open at 6:30am six days a week (closed Sundays), making them one of the earliest quality options on Le Van Mien.

The All-Day Spots

The Snap Cafe

The Snap on Tran Ngoc Dien is the kind of place that everyone ends up at eventually. It serves everything from coffee to smoothie bowls to full meals. The space is large by Thao Dien standards, with plenty of natural light and enough outlets to keep the remote-worker crowd happy.

The coffee itself is solid but not the star of the show. What keeps people coming back is the consistency and the atmosphere. It's relaxed without being sleepy, busy without being stressful. The kind of place where you go for a coffee and end up staying for three hours. Fifteen hundred Google reviews suggest the formula works.

Bonjour Cafe the Art

Bonjour occupies a colonial-style building on Thao Dien street with a garden that feels like it belongs in Dalat more than Thu Duc. The garden seating is the draw here. On weekday mornings, it's quiet enough to work. By Saturday afternoon, every table is full. The menu sprawls across Vietnamese and Western coffee styles, plus juices, smoothies, and a full food menu. The kind of place where you bring visitors and they immediately ask if you live here year-round.

Aramour Coffee Roasters

Aramour takes its roasting seriously. The beans are sourced and roasted in-house on Le Van Mien, and the baristas treat espresso extraction like a science project. The space is compact but well-designed, with a counter that lets you watch the process.

The flat white here is one of the best in Thao Dien. If that's your drink, this should be a regular stop.

The Neighborhood Fixtures

Cong Caphe

Every neighborhood needs a Cong, and Thao Dien's branch on Xuan Thuy fills the role perfectly. The retro aesthetic never gets old, and the coconut coffee is still the thing to order if you're showing someone around for the first time. Head upstairs for more space, better light, and fewer tourists.

Highlands Coffee is also on Xuan Thuy, and sometimes you just want a reliable iced tea or a freeze in a clean, air-conditioned space where nobody expects you to appreciate tasting notes. It's the McDonald's of Vietnamese coffee, and that's not always an insult.

The Hidden Gems

Machiya Coffee

Machiya sits on a quiet corner of Tong Huu Dinh, looking like someone transplanted a Kyoto kissaten to the tropics. The Japanese minimalism is real — clean lines, natural wood, no clutter — and it has a noticeable calming effect when you've been on Xuan Thuy for too long. The coffee menu straddles Vietnamese and Japanese styles well. The iced matcha latte is overpriced and worth every dong, but the espresso drinks hold their own too. One of the most consistent cafes in the neighborhood, and one of the quietest.

BARTELS

On Thao Dien street, BARTELS pairs specialty coffee with sourdough sandwiches and fresh-pressed juices. The coffee is thoughtfully sourced and well-extracted, and the shop has a clean, minimal feel that gets out of the way and lets the product do the talking. If you want good coffee and a proper sandwich without sitting through a five-page menu, this is your place.

Dalaland Coffee

Tucked into an alley off Tran Ngoc Dien, Dalaland is one of those places that's bigger on the inside than you'd expect from the entrance. The Dalat-inspired space has greenery and natural light, and they serve a solid range of Vietnamese and Western coffee styles. Nearly a thousand reviews from locals suggests the word is well and truly out, but the alley location still makes it feel like a discovery.

CHAM Cafe & Kem Bo Da Lat

CHAM on Ngo Quang Huy is technically an ice cream place, but their coffee deserves a mention. The Dalat-style avocado ice cream coffee is the signature, and it works better than it sounds. Nearly 1,200 reviews with a 4.9 rating puts it in rare company — people come for ice cream and stay for everything else.

LOST & SOUGHT Bakery Cafe

Out on Duong So 5 in An Khanh, Lost & Sought is one of those places that makes you wonder why it isn't more famous. Everything about it feels considered, from the sourdough to the pour-over. A short walk from the Thao Dien core, but the kind of walk that rewards you. Another perfect 5.0, and the baked goods alone are worth the trip.

The Practical Guide

The truth about coffee in Thao Dien is that it's hard to go truly wrong. Even the average cafe here is better than most places in other neighborhoods simply because of competition. The density forces quality up.

If you're visiting for the first time, start with XLIII for the best pure coffee experience, then swing past Bagel Brothers on Le Van Mien for a Melbourne latte and a bagel. If you live here and you're in a rut, try one of the smaller places on the side streets. Aramour and Machiya are consistently excellent. For Vietnamese-style coffee, Dolphy does the best traditional ca phe sua da.

The neighborhood drinks coffee from 6am to midnight. Join in.
