BARTELS Thao Dien - Sourdough Sandwiches, Coffee & Juicery - Brunch restaurant in Thao Dien, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City

About This Place
BARTELS bakes its own sourdough daily and the bread is the point — thick-cut, soft in the crumb, and grilled to a parmesan-dusted crust on every sandwich. The menu spans two dozen options: the Grilled Cubano layers smoked free-range ham with housemade pickled jalapeños and mild cheddar; Reuben's Cousin stacks premium tenderloin corned beef with spiced sauce and mustard; the Thai Touch riffs on larb with sous-vide chicken, lime, chili, and mint pressed between sourdough slices. Sweet Ham Brie pairs free-range ham with brie and red onion chutney for something closer to a French croque.
Egg dishes hold their own alongside the sandwiches. Turkish Eggs arrives as poached eggs over Greek yogurt with crispy chili oil and micro greens. Smashed Avocado adds feta and pickled onions to the same base. Cold-press juices and smoothie bowls — the acai bowl draws repeat mentions across reviews — round out a menu that skews fresh without tipping into austere.
The room is bright and plant-forward, morning light carries easily through the interior, which draws a mix of expat residents, visiting tourists, and neighborhood regulars who settle in with laptops or bring larger groups for weekend catch-ups. Service moves efficiently even through the midday crowd.
Vegan options run throughout: the Grilled Vegan Cubano swaps in eggplant or vegan sausage; vegan cheese and pesto variants exist for the grilled cheese and Oh Sweet Tomato. Whole or half sourdough loaves are sold to take home. At 670 reviews averaging 4.7 stars, this is among the most consistently rated brunch spots along Thảo Điền street, with at least one Bangkok regular who visits both cities describing the quality as equivalent across locations.
Reviews
Great place to hang out with friends on the weekend! A bit crowded at midday but not too noisy, can still chat with friends. I tried many dishes already, highly recommend sweet ham brie, grilled cheese and Thai touch! Smoothies bowls and coffee here are of high quality too! Staff are attentive and helpful overall.
On our last day of our Vietnam trip, we decided to wake up early to go for breakfast. Because it is Tet, we chose to go to district 2 because lots of restaurants will be opening there. We spotted Bartels and decided to give it a try and we glad we did! We were so impressed with everything on the menu , eqch of us got 3 dishes! The acai bowl was deff my favorite, it was fresh, refreshing especially with the vietnam’s weather! My siracha chicken sandwich on sourdough was ON POINT!! My fig and ricotta sandwich were also taste amazing and fresh and 100 points for display as all of th m came out so beautifully! The price is a bit on the costly side but i promise you it is worth it. I will deff be back to this place evrrytime im in vietnam!
A local favorite for sure. Bartels has such a cute space, great vibes and super friendly service. Sandwiches are tasty and well-made, juices and smoothies are fresh and perfect for a chill, stylish day out. Stopped by for a casual bite and ended up loving everything — food, drinks and the atmosphere. Definitely a go-to spot and I’ll be back again (very soon). 🥪🥤✨ Cảm ơn Bartels rất nhiều! ♥️
I've dined in, and had home delivery many times. I would prefer dine in to offer table service, but other than that, it's pretty faultless. Food is exceptionally good, especially the sandwiches and the various egg dishes. Flavours are great - particular favourites are the mild tuna (toasted or plain), and the scrambled eggs with avocado and smoked salmon. Coffee is great, as good as Starbucks in terms of arabica if you pay the extra. Cold press juices also very good. Overall, highly recommended to either visit in person or order a home delivery. If you do visit in person, it can get very busy, so choose your time wisely when it's more off peak.
