The Story

About This Place

Matsuri occupies a prominent spot inside Vincom Mega Mall Thảo Điền, which provides air-conditioned comfort and easy parking—practical advantages that draw families, expat regulars, and office workers from the surrounding district. The kitchen covers considerably more ground than a typical sushi bar: teishoku bento sets at lunch, mentaiko-grilled shellfish, hot pot, and a sashimi selection that includes bluefin tuna, which regulars specifically call out as difficult to source elsewhere in Saigon.

The oyster preparation—size-L Nihon Kaki grilled with cheese and mentai sauce—alongside the Sake-Toro Tataki finished with ponzu sauce illustrate a menu that reaches beyond the standard all-you-can-eat format common at comparable price points in the city. The bento lineup performs well at midday: unagi don, salmon-ikura don, maguro sashimi don, and the signature Matsuri bento give solo diners or pairs a structured, affordable option without committing to a multi-course spread. The hot pot component broadens the appeal to larger groups looking for a shared-table format.

With 1,237 Google reviews averaging 4.8, broad consistency is the norm, though a subset of accounts describe 45-minute waits during peak weekend hours and the occasional order failing to reach the kitchen without a follow-up. When service runs at its usual pace, dishes arrive promptly and the floor team is described as polite and accommodating. Pricing is consistently flagged as reasonable relative to quality.

Thảo Điền has no shortage of Japanese restaurants, but few combine this breadth of menu—sushi, sashimi, grilled shellfish, and hot pot—with mall-anchored accessibility and a volume of positive reviews this high. The Philadelphia roll has its advocates among the lunch crowd; the cold soba dipping sauce has drawn occasional criticism. In aggregate, Matsuri earns its neighborhood standing.

Our favorite Japanese restaurant in Thao Dien. Excellent quality sushi they even have tuna which is hard to find. The drinks seem to take longer than normal but we really love eating here. Highly recommend.

I had an iced tea, Philadelphia roll and dumplings for lunch today. Quick to be seated, quick service and the food was very good at an excellent price. Terrific lunch! Thanks

Some things better, some things worse than in other restaurants of this type, however, in general it's nice.

Service was quick and staff were polite and helpful. Prices are reasonable for the quality. I personally do not give 5 stars.

This was really the worst experience. I visited for lunch on the weekend and ordered three dishes. There were some empty tables, and it wasn’t very crowded. However, it took about 45 minutes for me to receive all my food. The table next to me, which came around the same time, had already finished their meal. Most disappointing of all, the dipping sauce for the cold soba noodles was warm and so bland that it had almost no taste at all. I don’t think I’ll ever come back again.
