if i could give a higher rating to this food i would. while it is not the cheapest, the quality, presentation and taste is so authentic I almost started crying. it tastes like those small wonderful hidden sushi places in mitse or namba in the kansai region. after Japan, i have lived here 3years and to date this is the BEST place ever. i am honored

Tama River - Japanese restaurant in Thao Dien, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City
About This Place
Tama River has quietly built one of the more consistent Japanese track records in Thao Dien, accumulating over 570 Google reviews at a steady 4.3 — the kind of number that suggests repeat locals rather than one-time tourists. The menu reads like a considered izakaya spread: raw and seared plates anchor the savory side, with the Sake Tataki (rare salmon, spicy ponzu) and Maguro Tataki sitting alongside a Gyu Saikoro Suteki of cubed Japanese-style beef. For those who prefer cooked small plates, the Yaki Gyoza and a Japanese-style rolled omelette stuffed with sea eel cover the more familiar izakaya ground. The Tako Kimchi — octopus tossed in kimchi sauce — is a slight departure from the straight-Japanese lineup, pointing toward a kitchen comfortable with Korean-adjacent flavors. Salads span wakame seaweed, salmon skin, and a kaisen seafood version that works well as a lighter opener. Sushi sets come in tuna and salmon configurations, each paired with miso soup, keeping the ordering simple for those who want a complete meal without navigating a lengthy omakase card. The split-service format — 10 AM to 2 PM for lunch, 5 PM to 10 PM for dinner, every day of the week — makes it more accessible than many Thao Dien Japanese spots that skip the midday shift entirely. The address on Thảo Điền street puts it deep in the residential pocket of the district, drawing the expat families and long-term residents who make up the neighborhood's backbone rather than the weekend-only crowd.

Love this place I hear at least twice a week. Hard to imagine that for $10 US you could have such an amazing meal. Literally one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in the entire world.
Simple, classic and never disappoints! This has been our goto Japanese restaurant for more than 10 years with over 150 visits. Consistently a great experience for food & service. Great value lunch menu 7 days a week with 50 options. Huge dinner menu, always fresh and tasty!!!! Highly recommended.
Its the first Japanese restaurant I tried in Thao Dien. Beyond expectation and always crowded with customers. Really enjoy the lunch set and the price is very reasonable. I was amazed with their sashimi and grilled chicken. Would definitely come back and try some sushi next time!
We love the lunch set at this place. I got the sashimi set and my friend had the sashimi and teriyaki set. The sashimi is so fresh in quality. The portion has the egg custard and miso soup as well. Such a good value option.
