Awesome and very chill place. Shockingly good food - I had the "big blue" burger with gorgonzola - 10 out of 10, strongly recommend. All the staff are great as well!

The Wok & Barrel Saigon - Sports bar in Thao Dien, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City
About This Place
Thao Dien has no shortage of rooftop bars and wine-forward terraces, but The Wok & Barrel Saigon occupies a different corner of the neighborhood's social life. The concept is straightforward: a British pub framework built around draft beer and wok-cooked dishes, with enough screens and open-air seating to make it a natural destination when a match is on. The kitchen draws on British pub traditions while the 'Wok' half of the name signals something more than chips and pies — wok-fired dishes sit alongside the expected bar food, giving the menu a Thao Dien-appropriate range that suits the area's mixed expat crowd. The beer garden format keeps things airy and sociable; this is a place that fills up with groups rather than couples lingering over a single glass. A 4.5 rating across 59 Google reviews points to a venue that consistently delivers on its promise without overreaching. Hours run Thursday through Sunday from mid-afternoon to 11 PM, which positions it squarely as a weekend and end-of-week fixture rather than an everyday local. For anyone in Thao Dien looking for a proper pint, live sport, and something more substantial than bar snacks, this is one of the few spots in the district built specifically around that combination.
Reviews
So, I came here last night to get some takeout, and I had an unpleasant experience to say the least; volatile might be a better way to describe it. The place was empty except for two middle-aged men sitting at the bar. After I ordered my food, I also sat at the bar to have a beer myself and wait on the food. Almost immediately, one of those men for no apparent reason reaches his arm out towards me and gives me the middle finger. He then yelled something half- incoherent which I took to mean his aggression was somehow related to the song that was being played at the time “The Boys are Back in Town” by Thin Lizzie and he was from Australia. I tried asking him what he meant, but he screamed, “I can’t hear you” a couple times. I just kept quiet. The server at the bar came over to me and apologized by making an excuse for him saying he was drunk – a sincere gesture on her part but actually bad form: alcohol is not an excuse for inappropriate, aggressive behavior – certainly not one for accosting another customer. This apology also gave me the impression that this man was either a regular customer or possibly involved in the restaurant somehow. The troublemaker wasn’t finished yet, and things got worse and uglier as well. He began to forcefully bang his hands on the bar to the music while staring directly at me. I was staring back at him as well because I know when alcohol is involved anything is possible as people can be at their worst; I wanted to be ready for it. His friend then, I believe, tried to distract him by standing and dancing to the music playing which my aggressor joined in with. Now here’s the ugly part: After a bit, the bad man sat back down and asked me if I was Jewish. So this is what this is all about: anti-Semitism. Even though I am, I said no. While it abhors me denying who I am, anti-Semitism is genuine evil and more times than not violent; it’s best to walk away from these situations then prove a point to no one, especially a bigot practicing his racism. And after hearing the man ask me this, I think his friend then had enough. He looked at me with a kind of shocked look on his face and screamed at his friend more than a few times words to the effect, “What are you doing? I don’t understand you.” The man tried to say something back to him, but his friend wouldn’t listen and kept cutting him off. He then tried to talk to me, and I cut him off by screaming, “We are good,” twice. It was pretty much over now. My food came out and I was ready to leave. I picked-up the package and walked over to both of those two men. I told them I was recently in Australia and was at Bondi a day before the anti-Semitic mass murder of 15 people took place on Hannukah. I told them that when he asked me if I was Jewish, he reminded me of what this and that it all connects to Australia. His friend kind of bowed his head and the bad man just looked at me. I left and won’t return to this business. And needless to say, when I returned home the food somehow didn’t taste right and really only took a couple bites. I pretty much just threw it away.
Ordered 2 tofu dishes with rice takeaway. Pretty pricey for both but was happy to pay as I was expecting high quality. They were 80% mushrooms, which were not in the list of ingredients. Taste was real disappointing, and I ended up with an enormous bowl of mushrooms and an empty belly after paying close to 600k. Wild.
Great place, good for local people coming relax and drinking. I really love this Sports bar and I will come back soon 🤣
