NONG - Farm To Grill Xuân Thuỷ - Restaurant in Thao Dien, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City

About This Place
Nong sits on Xuân Thủy operating strictly dinner hours — 4:30 to 11:30 PM every day of the week — drawing a predominantly local crowd that arrives in groups for tableside grilling and cold beers. The farm-to-grill concept centers on fresh ingredients delivered to each table's built-in grill, where staff actively assist with cooking, a feature multiple reviewers single out as genuinely helpful rather than performative. The house dipping sauces complement the grilled meats and draw consistent praise across reviews.
The setting is outdoor and spacious, which means the experience trades air-conditioning for open-air atmosphere. Smoke from adjacent grills is ambient, heat from the barbecues is real, and flies appear in warmer conditions — details that factor into the dining experience alongside the lively, social energy the space produces. The venue sits within walking distance of a Metro station, making it accessible without a motorbike.
With close to 4,000 Google reviews averaging 4.8 stars, the reputation reflects a local institution rather than a trend-chasing newcomer. Staff receive consistent praise for friendliness and efficient service, and some English is spoken. Pricing runs higher than standard Korean BBQ competitors in the area — portion sizes have drawn occasional criticism relative to cost — but the farm-sourced ingredient premise and the level of table service justify the positioning for the regulars who fill the space nightly. Hot pot beef is also available alongside the grill options, though the thick-cut slice style is worth knowing in advance. Nong occupies a distinct position in Thao Dien's dining scene: a Vietnamese-style outdoor grill leaning into freshness and hospitality, drawing families, friend groups, and visitors who want something beyond the neighborhood's international restaurant concentration.
Reviews
Restaurant was mostly empty on arrival, yet we were made to wait for an assigned table instead of choosing. Staff mentioned many reservations, but we stayed until closing and saw that hardly anyone arrived: most tables were free throughout. The table itself was very sticky. We wiped it with one of the wet wipes provided. The results are in the photograph. Pretty disgusting, but not surprising: on multiple occasions we watched staff "clean" tables by wiping a dirty cloth over previous customers' mess without using cleaning products. We were asked to order using the app instead of giving our order to available staff. A bit annoying, but we made the order anyway. The IT system subsequently crashed and the staff had to process our order manually. While we prefer that, it caused a delay that would be avoided by simply writing orders as people are seated; there were plenty of staff available to do so. The app may be efficient on busy nights, but it wasn't busy. We ordered an item meant to have a specific ingredient, but it did not contain any more than a tiny morsel and it had no flavour difference compared to the basic product which we also ordered. When we mentioned this, rather than fixing it or apologising for the lack of ingredients, the staff argued the item was as intended. This didn't sit well with us so we insisted on returning the item and refused to pay for it. An order of raw vegetables took around 20 minutes to arrive while many staff were idle nearby. Hard to understand when the floor is quiet and staff are visibly not engaged. When we got our meat barbecue, the beef was good. Unfortunately the staff placed hot coals just before barbecuing marinated pork. The pork burned black almost immediately due to sugar content and heat. This was frustrating; good food spoiled by poor handling. Dirty tables nearby took over 30 minutes to clear even though the restaurant was overstaffed. This added to the impression that staff were present but not engaged. We tried the QR code meant for providing feedback as we wanted to report these issues privately. The website link did not work due to a security error on the restaurant side. That's why we are providing feedback publicly. In summary, decent food, good drinks, but very dirty tables, poor staff training, and weak service. Lots of potential: it's a nice place to sit, not too hot, and quite spacious, but the standards around cleanliness and service are far too low for us to want to return.
The place is spacious and the staff are friendly but the cleanliness was really disappointing. As soon as I touched the chair, my hand was covered in dust and I had to ask to change seats. The chopsticks and spoons were not clean either. We asked the staff to grill the food for us but it was still undercooked , had to leave the food and couldn’t eat it. The beef for the hot pot was very tough,I honestly don’t understand why they slice hot pot beef that thick. The staff who were selling beer kept interrupting us, asking us to hold an award and take photos for their fake report, which was quite annoying. The restaurant also allows smoking inside, so my hair and clothes ended up smelling like smoke. I might come back only if there are no other places to go in the area.
So good so far, can take a walk from Metro to this place with no sweat. Staffs are willing to help cooking. No tips are required, but we should do, because the staffs are so helpful.
I had a quick glimpse at the menu and thought this is standard pricing. When the food arrived, I realised it was rabbit food portion, which then makes the price very expensive 1.7 mil to get 4 of us full - a lot more expensive than a kbbq nearby for a pretty mediocre Vietnamese style bbq. I guess we call that the Ngoc Trinh effect Everything is else is fine, spacious area, good staff service
