The Story

About This Place

Sitting on a quiet stretch of Nguyễn Bá Lân, Union Jack's has earned a reputation that runs well beyond the expat community that first put it on the map. The fish selection covers barramundi (listed as seabass), ling cod, sweetlip snapper, and ling cod salmon — each available battered and fried in medium or large portions alongside handcut chips. The snapper is described in reviews as firm and flaky under a particularly crisp batter; the triple-cooked chips are made in-house and represent a genuine investment in technique over the standard approach. Beyond the core formula, the kitchen offers potato scallops (battered potato slices, available thin or thick), salt 'n' pepper chips tossed in Chinese-style seasoning, and bangers and mash that earned consecutive repeat visits in at least one reviewer's account.

Sunday shifts the room: the roast dinner — generous portions of tender meat, crispy roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, and a gravy rich enough to stand on its own — has accumulated its own stream of five-star commentary and is frequently cited among the better British roasts available in Ho Chi Minh City. A single large order often covers two.

Breakfast rolls extend the range into morning hours: an English Breakfast Roll with banger sausages, back bacon, and caramelized onion; a double bacon version in homemade bread. The house-made Branston pickle has earned specific mention from regulars who grew up with the real thing.

The space is dog-friendly and skews unhurried. Motorbike parking out front is limited. Hours vary by day — closed Wednesday and Saturday, shorter hours on Thursday and Friday — worth confirming before the trip.

As I’ve made HCMC my new home, it’s understandable that from time to time. A bit of comfort food is required. Union jacks fits this brief in every way. Dining in of an evening is terrific, and a bonus that they are super dog friendly (well behaved dogs only). The occasional takeaway is absolute bliss. And wherever I’ve lived in the world. I’ve often craved a simple Cheese and pickle sandwich. And their homemade Branston pickle is unbelievable. Top quality ingredients, excellent staff and a comfortable atmosphere.

not big on fish and chips, so I cant say how it stacks up to the UK classics. Portions are big, and depending on the fish, the batter can feel a bit thick. I tried the snapper and ling cod, both were tender and enjoyable.

I recently visited Union Jack's and had what might be the best roast dinner I've ever been served. Honestly, every aspect of the experience was stellar, but the Sunday roast deserves a dedicated spotlight. The roast dinner was an absolute masterclass in comfort food. The meat was incredibly tender and succulent, cooked exactly to perfection. The accompanying elements were equally impressive—the roast potatoes were perfectly crispy, the vegetables were fresh and vibrant, and the Yorkshire pudding was delightfully airy. But the true hero? The gravy. It was rich, deep, and savory, truly elevating the entire plate and tying all the flavors together. Beyond the food, the atmosphere at Union Jack's was fantastic—warm, inviting, and exactly what you want for a great meal out. The service was also top-notch, with the staff being attentive and friendly throughout our visit. It’s clear the team here takes pride in what they do. If you are looking for a perfectly executed, satisfying, and truly delicious meal, run, don't walk, to Union Jack's. This place is a gem, and the roast dinner is an absolute must-try. Five stars all around!

The fish and chips were amazing, tasted just as good as our local chippy at home. Me and my partner shared a large cod and chips and some bread and butter and was more than enough for us both. Would recommend to anyone craving something from home!
