The Story

About This Place

The Gate occupies a corner of 17 Thảo Điền where the menu skews firmly European: Italian-leaning starters, sauced steaks, and — somewhat unexpectedly for a Saigon neighbourhood restaurant — Osetra caviar. The caviar is not a gimmick; reviewers consistently describe it as fresh and well-served, with proper condiments and elegant presentation at a price that doesn't require a special occasion.

Wednesday nights draw a different crowd. A ribeye promotion pushing under 500,000 VND pulls steak-seekers who know the deal; on other nights the same kitchen sends out pan-seared tuna with wasabi mayo and black fish roe, scallop carpaccio, and tiger prawn crostini built from giant tiger prawns, butter, bell pepper, and yellow lemon. The arancini — Italian fried risotto stuffed with minced beef — are a reliable table starter that shows up across multiple orders.

Risotto appears in several forms: the mushroom version earns praise for being creamy and flavour-forward, though at least one diner found it underdone on a given visit, suggesting some inconsistency at the pass. The seabass with risotto is a recurring order among regulars. Sauce choices run wide — blue cheese, garlic butter, pepper, red wine, mushroom — giving the kitchen flexibility across the steak section.

The atmosphere leans toward long evenings rather than quick lunches. Music registers as loud enough to notice but not loud enough to end a conversation. Staff draw consistent mentions for warmth, and presentation across the menu is considered — plates arrive looking deliberate. The crowd mixes Thao Dien expats with special-occasion tables and walk-ins who discovered the Wednesday deal. Hours run to 11:30 PM most nights, with Monday opening later at 3 PM.

Unfortunately bad. Do not bother. Ordered octopus salad which was underseasoned and very chewy and bland . One piece had a fresh taste, the rest just tasted dried. Don’t bother. Then had duck breast. Quality of the meat was excellent , unfortunately quality of the cooking was awful. Asked for pink and it came out almost rare. Asked to cook further and came out more than well done. accompanying source was tasteless and the whole plate had been chucked in the oven to cook the duck further so everything was soggy. Choice of house wines very underwhelming. All in all you’ll pay a lot for very little quality of food.

Amazing caviar dinner experience at The Gate! The Osetra caviar tasted absolutely delicious — fresh, rich, and perfectly served with great condiments. The presentation was elegant, and the quality for the price is excellent. We also had the mushroom risotto as our main course — so flavorful and creamy. Highly recommended!
