A really lovely place! The pho helped us a lot when we were having stomach issues. We had the chicken version, and you can ask for a milder option if needed. Highly recommend!
Phở Gà Mộc - Vietnamese restaurant in Thao Dien, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City
About This Place
This small room on Xuân Thủy fits roughly 15 people and opens at 6am — details that define its character before the food arrives. The kitchen runs a focused Northern Vietnamese menu: phở gà, xôi gà đùi, bún măng mọc, miến trộn, and cơm gà, all prepared by an owner from Bà Rịa who taught herself the Hanoi approach and executes it with enough precision to earn praise from Hanoi-native diners who rank it at or above unnamed shops back home.
The broth distinguishes itself from most Southern phở. Clear and savory, it avoids the MSG-driven sweetness that dominates many local adaptations. The chicken arrives with properly crisped skin — a detail often overlooked in neighborhood pho shops. The phở gà đặc biệt comes generously portioned with additional meat and soft-boiled eggs (trứng non lòng đào), while regulars typically add a side of lưng chặt.
Among the non-pho options, xôi gà đùi draws repeat orders, and the bún măng mọc gà đùi — bamboo shoot noodle soup with chicken leg — holds its own as a standalone visit reason. The miến trộn and cơm gà complete a menu that gives repeat visitors real rotation without padding it with filler dishes.
Pricing tracks noticeably below the Thao Dien average, which explains the documented return-visit pattern: one reviewer counted a fifth trip, another called it the best noodle in the area. The nước sấu — a Vietnamese salted olive drink — gets its own shoutout across multiple reviews. The space is air-conditioned and closes at 6pm daily, making it a morning-to-midafternoon proposition suited to neighborhood locals and early-rising expats rather than evening crowds.
Reviews
Best noodle in town , 5th time coming back and still love the taste . Highly recommend.
This is a simple pho shop - nothing fancy - just great pho!
