The Story

About This Place

Perched above a quiet lane off Nguyễn Văn Hưởng, Kumo Rooftop Bar draws Thao Dien's expat crowd and visiting travelers with one reliable combination: cold drinks, warm staff, and a west-facing view that catches Saigon's sunset at its best. The rooftop pool — compact but genuinely swimmable — sets it apart from the neighborhood's other elevated bars, making weekend afternoons feel more like a private escape than a standard bar tab.

The drinks lean global: Aperol Spritzes arrive properly built, Bloody Marys are ordered by name by repeat visitors, and a short wine list makes group rounds easy. The kitchen turns out food that earns its own mention — the chicken waffle, quietly championed by staff member Mie, surprises guests expecting standard bar snacks. Tenderloin and fresh garlic bread round out a menu built for grazing rather than formal dining.

What keeps people coming back is less the view than the atmosphere generated by a small, attentive team. Staff names — Mie, Mei, Foo — appear in reviews the way regulars mention bartenders at their local. The vibe carries a faint LA-by-way-of-Saigon quality: soft lighting as the sun drops, low background noise, groups settling in well past their intended one-drink stop.

Kumo suits a specific kind of evening — one that starts with sunset cocktails and drifts toward a second round. It draws couples, birthday groups, and solo travelers who end up staying until the city lights come on. Closed Mondays; weekends open from 11 AM when the pool makes most sense. The entrance on Nguyễn Văn Hưởng takes a moment to locate, which keeps the terrace at a consistently easy volume.

The place is very cozy. The staff is very friendly, especially the girl named Mie, who recommended me to try the chicken waffle. Surprisingly, it was amazing. I highly recommend visiting this place and enjoying the sunset with a breathtaking view of the city. There is also a small but very comfortable pool, especially on hot days.
