The Story

About This Place

Đèn Dầu occupies a modest address on Ngô Quang Huy, opening its doors each afternoon at 4 PM when the neighborhood starts to exhale after the workday. The kitchen leans into Vietnamese fusion with enough specificity to make the menu memorable: bánh xèo tacos reframe a southern classic in a handheld format, jellyfish tart brings textural contrast that surprises first-time visitors, and the fried rice with crab meat has become a reliable order for regulars. A fish with tamarind sauce rounds out a menu where familiar flavors arrive in reconfigured presentations rather than wholesale reinventions. Portions run larger than the small-plates framing might suggest, which makes sharing across a table of four genuinely satisfying rather than performative.

The drinks list holds its own alongside the food. A plum cocktail draws repeat mentions from guests who arrived expecting the food to carry the evening and left talking about both. Soft background music and subdued lighting keep the room conversational — the kind of place where a two-hour dinner passes without anyone noticing. Seating extends outdoors, an option worth considering on the drier evenings Thao Dien gets between monsoon stretches.

The crowd skews toward couples and small groups of colleagues unwinding after office hours, and the staff moves efficiently without hovering. Pricing sits at a level that makes a full meal plus cocktails feel reasonable against comparable fusion spots further into District 2. In a neighborhood where new bars arrive seasonally, Đèn Dầu has built a following on consistency rather than novelty — the menu does not overreach, and the kitchen delivers on what it promises.

Cute little spot for a date or a chill hangout with friends. Menu’s got Vietnamese fusion dishes, and the portions are surprisingly big! We tried quite a few — not mind-blowing, but good enough to enjoy with some wine and the cozy vibe. Worth a try! Might come back next time to sit outdoors. 🌿🍷 I would recommend you to try 😌

Food was good – tasty and just the right amount, not too much, not too little. Drinks were solid too. I picked one of their best sellers and it hit the spot.

When you want to gather with friends to relax after stressful working hours, I think you should come to the oil lamp ( Đèn Dầu) restaurant, relax a little with plum cocktail and enjoy soft music to chill with friends on a rainy day, what could be better? I feel that the oil lamp ( Đèn Dầu) restaurant model is suitable for me, the dishes are seasoned very richly and look eye-catching.All the dishes are very reasonably priced and the staff are friendly and quick to respond when we need anything or order more dishes. Abalone and caviar stir fried noodles: trust me you have to order this, it explodes with the flavour of abalone and caviar in your mouth, the chef has handled the abalone quite well I don't find any fishy taste in it. Grilled white pomfret fillet in banana leaves with green sauce. The fish is deboned and wrapped in banana leaves to grill, making the fish juicy and soaked in sauce. You can feel the freshness of each piece of fish, and the slight spiciness of the sauce makes you not know how to describe it. The last dish is also the dish I recommend you definitely order when you come here: beef rolls with green mustard, oh my gosh it's so delicious. The crunchiness and sweetness of the vegetables, seaweed leaves, the juiciness and freshness of the beef, the bitterness of the green mustard, it's an explosion of flavors, come eat quickly, what are you waiting for?

We love the dishes we had for dinner. You have to try the banh xeo tacos, the jellyfish tart, the fried rice with crab meat, the fish with tamarind sauce. It’s exciting to taste the combination of flavour with all well-known dishes with a bit of creative touch. The atmosphere is cozy and suitable for both couples and group gathering. Will definitely come back to try the whole menu.
