The Story

About This Place

Tiệm Chay Cỏ Cú brings Central Vietnamese temple-style cooking to Thao Dien, opening at 5:30 AM — one of the earliest starts in a neighborhood that mostly doesn't stir until mid-morning. The kitchen draws from Hue's vegetarian tradition, with the vegan bún bò Huế as the anchor dish: aromatic, spiced, and constructed to carry the character of the original without any animal products.

The Vietnamese salad has attracted its own following among regulars, described by diners as fresh and precisely balanced, with layered flavors that stand up well in a city full of strong competition. Bamboo mushrooms also feature on the menu, though portion sizes have drawn some comment. The room is compact and carefully arranged — polished without being formal, and quiet enough for a solo meal or unhurried conversation.

For vegans navigating Thao Dien, which largely caters to omnivores, the fully plant-based menu removes the usual guesswork. Pricing is accessible by neighborhood standards, though the restaurant carries a slightly refined quality that some find at odds with its casual price point. The 5:30 AM opening makes it a practical option before the expat brunch crowd arrives, drawing early risers and those who want a slower start to the day.

Staff are polite and attentive; the menu exists in English online but not in print, which can create friction for first-time visitors. The kitchen follows set recipes and has been noted as inflexible about modifications, so diners with specific requests should come prepared. At 4.8 stars across nearly 200 reviews, the consensus sits well above average, even accounting for a handful of dissenting voices on seasoning and authenticity relative to Hue itself.

First time trying Thiem Chay Co Cu after seeing it on Grab, and it did not disappoint. I ordered the bún bò Huế and a salad, and both were excellent. The Vietnamese salad honestly had some of the best Asian-inspired flavors I’ve ever had — fresh, well balanced, and packed with taste. Everything felt thoughtfully prepared and satisfying. Love that this place is fully vegan as well. I’ll definitely be dining in next time. Highly recommended 🌱

Cỏ Cú is supposed to represent Hue-style vegetarian cuisine, but I found it very disappointing. The dishes were far too oily and overly salty, nothing like the authentic vegetarian food I’ve enjoyed in Hue. Overall, I would not recommend this place to anyone!!!

Pretty restaurant. Small portion of bamboo mushrooms. Inflexible about rice. For one person shouldn't bring so much, it's a waste. I asked for a half order and they refused.

Everything was meh. Nothing to brag about. Neither good nor bad.
