The Story

About This Place

On a stretch of Xuân Thủy that fills up with expat regulars and Thao Dien residents looking for something straightforward and well-executed, The Cook operates as a one-person show — the French owner works an open kitchen, preparing each order in plain sight of the dining room. The menu is deliberately short, which keeps quality consistent and means nothing sits around. Spaghetti carbonara and an omelette panini appear repeatedly across reviews, both described as freshly made with authentic flavor rather than the adapted versions common elsewhere in the neighborhood. Chicken salad paired with coffee has become a reliable lunch combination for regulars. The setup is unfussy: no performance, no elaborate plating, just honest Western cooking at a price point that draws repeat visits from groups and solo diners alike. Several reviewers note returning specifically because the food delivered what it promised the first time. The French owner is mentioned warmly by name in multiple reviews, which says something about the scale of the place — small enough that the person cooking is also the person greeting you. Crepes are on the menu but have drawn mixed feedback, with one reviewer noting the Nutella portion felt thin. The bolognese received a rare critical note about meat texture, a reminder that a short menu still has room to improve. Closed on Tuesdays; hours vary across the week, so checking ahead for evening visits is worth it.

Ordered a bolognese. Some of the meat is really hard to chew I had to spit it out. Very average food. Crepe is also average and doesn’t have enough Nutella. Prices aren’t cheap either

Excellent place to eat fresh cooked food. A small menu but quality food cooked right in front of you. We had spaghetti Carbonara and an omlette panini. Both were freshly cooked with authentic flavors and served with love.
