The Story

About This Place

ROCH sits on Nguyễn Văn Hưởng in the quieter residential part of Thao Dien, drawing expats and locals who take laminated pastry seriously. The kitchen has made a deliberate choice to stay close to French technique without adjusting for local sweetness preferences — croissants are reheated to order, properly layered, with the kind of crust that most Saigon bakeries approximate but rarely achieve. The pain au chocolat and croissant aux amandes hold to the same standard. A more recent addition, the almond Pithivier, has drawn early enthusiasm for its crisp shell and dense, balanced almond fill.

The space is generous by neighborhood standards. Indoor seating is spare and considered — simple materials, enough room between tables that it doesn't feel rushed. A side-alley terrace handles the dog-friendly crowd and catches morning light; it's where the regulars tend to land. Doors open at 6 AM, which gives ROCH a window that most Thao Dien cafes miss entirely.

Coffee sits in a more contested position. Reviews range from satisfied to genuinely disappointed, suggesting it functions as an accompaniment rather than a draw in its own right. Guests who arrive for the pastry case tend to leave more satisfied than those expecting precision espresso.

What separates ROCH from the wider Thao Dien cafe landscape is its restraint. There's no evidence of menu drift toward local palates or trend-chasing additions. That consistency is its clearest advantage for anyone specifically looking for French-style laminated dough done without compromise — a category that remains thinly represented in this part of the city.

I picked up a piece of bread here and it tasted very good. However, I noticed that some of the bread displayed outside had flies on them, which honestly took away my appetite a bit. If you’re buying here, it’s better to choose the ones displayed inside the clear container for better hygiene. The quality is good, but they really need to manage the display area more carefully.

Very good french croissant (the right taste, crust, texture). Coffee is just ok. Small place under a tech shop, not crowded. Nice on the street seating on the side alley.

• One of the few Western-style bakeries in Saigon that has been minimally localized. While the menu offers a wide range of options, the bakery clearly excels in its laminated pastries. Upon ordering, most pastries are reheated before serving (with the exception of chilled items). • The space is spacious and thoughtfully designed—simple yet refined—with both indoor and outdoor seating available.
