The Story

About This Place

Cú Trên Cây Coffee occupies a generous plot on Ung Van Khiem in Binh Thanh, and its layout does more work than its address might suggest. The entrance passes through a plant shop, which frames the space as a discovery rather than a storefront — customers walking past on the main road may not register that a full multi-zone cafe sits behind it. Once inside, the property opens into distinct areas: an air-conditioned indoor section, an open garden courtyard, a rooftop level upstairs, and a book cafe designated for quieter work, each carrying its own pace and noise level.

The decor leans into shabby-chic without tipping into clutter — weathered wood, vintage objects, and dense plantings that soften every surface. Small shops selling handcrafted keychains and ceramic bowls are worked into the layout, adding texture that most cafes in the city don't bother with. The food program runs beyond standard pastries: handmade cookies are served with egg cream, including bear-shaped biscuits filled with cream and thin salted long biscuits, details that give the kitchen real character.

The egg coffee is a genuine standout. The barista will prepare it without condensed milk or sugar on request and it still holds up, which points to the quality of the base espresso rather than sweetness doing the heavy lifting.

Parking is unusually generous for a Saigon cafe of this size — the lot capacity doubles as a real-time crowd gauge, since it fills at roughly the same rate as the seating. The clientele skews local Vietnamese, with a steady flow of foreign visitors drawn by social posts and word of mouth. On weekdays the book cafe and quiet zones attract students and solo workers; on weekends the garden and rooftop pull in larger groups. Service consistency has drawn some criticism in recent reviews, particularly around table management during peak hours.

Cu Tren Cay Coffee on Ung Van Khiem is not a large café, but its clever layout makes it feel much more spacious than it actually is. Instead of trying to be big, the café focuses on creating multiple distinct areas, each with its own vibe. There is an indoor section, a garden space, and a rooftop area upstairs, which helps avoid the cramped feeling that small cafés often suffer from. What really stands out is how heavily the space is covered in greenery. Trees, plants, and small landscape details are everywhere, creating a refreshing and nature-oriented atmosphere right in the middle of the city. The garden area feels cool and relaxing, while the rooftop offers a more open, breezy setting that works especially well in the late afternoon or evening. The indoor seating is cozy and calm, suitable for reading, casual work, or quiet conversations. Lighting is mostly natural, and the décor leans toward simple, earthy elements rather than trendy or flashy designs. The café feels intentionally “slow,” which is a nice contrast to the noisy streets outside. The drink menu is fairly standard, including coffee, tea, and fruit-based beverages, with reasonable prices for the area. Nothing overly experimental, but solid enough for most people. Overall, Cu Tren Cay Coffee is a great choice if you enjoy green spaces, layered environments, and a relaxed, down-to-earth café experience without the need for a huge venue.

Lovely cottage core, rustic themed cafe~ Parking is a bit of a hassle since it’s on the other street. Drinks are great. Decor is great. Vibe is great. There are a handful of little handcrafted keychains and ceramic bowl shops hidden inside. Overall a relaxing rest-stop on the bustling street. Would recommend for foreigners who would like to experience a trendy local cafe shop~

Came here on a rainy day, so the place was a little wet here and there - the outdoor area was completely wet, but luckily we reserved a spot for the five of us at the cafe and got the biggest table. :) There was a part of the roof that was dripping, so the staff were quick to put a bowl there to protect the water from splashing onto us. We ordered their various handmade cookies which were served with egg cream - loved the bear cookies that had cream in the biscuits and the salty long biscuits that fit well with the egg cream. Food was very nice, we tried banh mi with sizzling beef, fried noodles, and rice noodle soup - im not too sure of the names but they do have english translations under the vietnamese names for the menu. We finished the meal with lemon cake, which tasted lovely with a bite of the sweet lemon slice on top of the cake. The slight bitterness of the lemon complements the sweetness of the cake, which was less sweet than the lemon slice so it didn't feel overwhelming. Enjoyed the Egg coffee, Salted cream coffee and tea drinks tremendously - Cu Tren Cay is a cosy beautiful place you should visit at least once when in Ho Chi Minh. ;)

The whole cafe is enormous with lots of zones (indoor with AC, outdoor, quiet zones, etc.), plants & vintage decos. Drinks are alright. However, some customers were so ignorant & inconsiderate they left their purses at a table to "preserve" it then left to take photos somewhere else for a long time.

Fantastic cafe with plenty of seats and parking. A rare case where they have as much parking space as they do seats so just one look at the parking and you know exactly how crowded they are at the moment. The cafe is one big garden to sit in and walk through with enough AC and open seats for everyone.
