The Story

About This Place

Chi Cao sits on a side street off Trần Não, its entrance easy to miss — there is no shopfront facing the main road, just a small space known mostly to regulars and expats who have found it by word of mouth. The interior is simple: nothing decorative, nothing to distract from what arrives at the table. That focus shows in the cooking. Rather than leaning on heavy seasoning or processed meat substitutes, the kitchen lets ingredients carry the dishes. The pineapple fried rice arrives lightly oiled, the fruit sweet against well-cooked rice, seasoned with restraint. Tangzhou fried rice has drawn repeat visitors. Several eggplant and tofu preparations round out a menu that is broader than it first appears, though availability on individual items can vary — a minor frustration noted by some diners, worth keeping in mind when ordering.

Alongside the cooked food, Chi Cao stocks a small selection of vegan retail products: protein bars and bean milks for those who want to take something home or supplement a meal. Service is fast and the staff friendly. No English is spoken, and payment is cash only; a small motorbike parking area sits out front, which matters in this part of An Khánh.

The clientele tends toward locals and health-conscious expats who have grown wary of the heavily seasoned, fake-meat-heavy vegetarian cooking common elsewhere in the region. At its price point, Chi Cao produces food that feels genuinely considered — the kind of place that rewards a deliberate trip rather than a spontaneous walk-by, and that stands apart from the more polished plant-based options clustered closer to the Saigon River.

This is a no-frills joint for some seriously good vegetarian food. Coming from Singapore where the usual interpretation of vegetarian food is fake meats with lots of seasoning, the food here is a refreshing take on what vegetarian food should look like: the celebration of the ingredients. When you bite into the food, you can feel the love and attention that has gone into making it. The seasoning is balanced, the execution for each dish is perfect. This is a place I’d make a special trip to if I want good vegetarian food.

I go to this restaurant for dinner. I order an eggplant dish and a tofu dish. After waiting a bit, the eggplant dish arrives. I wait several minutes for the tofu to arrive, but 10 minutes later, the waitress tells me that it is not available today. She apologizes and was friendly. So I order a different tofu dish, and she tells me that this one is available. I wait, and she comes back ten minutes later to tell me that they don't have any tofu at all today... Why didn't she tell me this earlier and go and ask in the kitchen? I'm usually patient, but the service wasn't good. This wasn't the first mistake at this restaurant, which is why I'm leaving this comment. The food is delicious, though!

Food is generally good for an honest price. Zero English, service very basic, no credit card accepted.
