The Story

About This Place

Trois Gourmands has earned one of the more durable reputations for French dining in Thao Dien, with 571 Google reviews holding at 4.4 stars — a rating that reflects sustained quality rather than a single viral moment. The restaurant occupies a spot on Trần Ngọc Diện, a residential side street at the quieter edge of the district's dining corridor, drawing the expatriate community and local professionals who make up much of Thao Dien's regular dining crowd.

The schedule follows the structure of a European bistro: lunch runs from 11:30 AM to 2 PM, dinner from 5:30 PM onward, with a proper break between services. This format is less common in Ho Chi Minh City's typically continuous restaurant day and tends to attract diners seeking a genuine sit-down meal over a quick turnaround.

The name — Trois Gourmands, three food lovers — signals the kitchen's orientation. It positions the restaurant as one run by people invested in the craft of French cooking rather than French cuisine deployed as a lifestyle backdrop. In a neighborhood where many Western-leaning spots blur the line between cafe, bar, and restaurant, the format here offers a cleaner focus on the table.

For Thao Dien specifically, where competition ranges from high-end tasting menus to neighborhood bistros, holding this volume of reviews at 4.4 on a single listing points to a kitchen with reliable output across both services. The review count suggests regular return visitors over a tourist draw — in a neighborhood like this, that usually means the food itself keeps people coming back.

It’s always scary when traveling to find an empty restaurant with a very extensive menu. Think SNL lobster diner. The staff was beyond attentive and thoughtful, but the quality of the food was unfortunate. Also, the wine prices were ridiculously high, even for fine dining. I don’t know how they got any Michelin mentions.

Reserved a table for lunch on weekdays, two of us enjoyed a 5-courses lunch set. The food is value for money and quality is fine. We have a bottle of red wine and enjoy the whole restaurant with no other customers.

this is my review from 2013- October. I went back in 2016. I think onwnership had changed. I had met Gils in 2013 and I think he had unfortunately passed when I visited in 2016. Oct 2013 My friend and I were in two minds - whether we should go for a traditional Vietnamese or a French dinner in HCMC. Eventually the fact that it has a very large wine cellar tilted the scale in favour of TG. It is not located in the hotspot of tourism- District 1, but I guess that adds to the charm. The restaurant is located completely unpretentiously in a small lane and occupies a large villa. We were welcomed very warmly by Joel, the manager of the place- initially who I thought was the owner Gils- in French accents Joel and Gils sounded the same to my untrained ear. The wine cellar is impressive, very impressive. What wouldn't I give to have something like that - and I was told another 8,000 (yes!) are expected within the next few weeks. The food was excellent. The place has a concept of 3 set meals the only difference being in the number of starters (1, 2 or 3). The meal started with scrambled egg with truffle sauce. The small size of it did make us a little wary (more about that later). It tasted amazing. This was followed by our starters (2 each). We had the smoked salmon (smoked in-house), cabbage duck in goose liver sauce, scallops with potatoes and truffle oil and lamb lasagne. By the end of the starters the small helping of the scrambled eggs was a distant memory. All the 4 starters were great but the cabbage duck and scallops stood out. To change the taste we were given some lemon sorbet. The next course was the main course. I had pork with foie gras and my friend - lamb shoulders. Both were excellent. This was followed by some cheese and the finale was dessert- dessert de Gils and another one (can't remember the name). Our wine was a Chateau Matras, St. Emillion- a great recommendation from Gils (the owner) who kindly gave us a short tour of the cellar. My friend and I had a great time in the restaurant. He and I were there almost till midnight talking to Joel about France, wine and Montpellier- where Joel hails from and coincidentally one of the 2 cities in France where I have been - even Joel was surprised that I had been there. Would love to go back in my next trip to HCMC. And will recommend it any day.

Not in plain sight , was recommended by locals. Well rounded french restaurant that I willing part my cash on the indulgence. A detailed breakdown of my experience is as follows: Bread is crumbly , warm n crisp Butter mild. Lightly salted. Egg scrambled with truffles is rather meh. Runny scrambled with way too coarse pepper. Giving individual a chock on the throat. No very distinctive truffle taste. Only a little well cooked mushroom bits on it. Appetizer of lobster n asparagus Foam sauce is great, multi level of taste anchor with lobster umami Asparagus could be more crisp 😁 bite. Love the caramelised onion. Well done. Lobster is filled with favour and wholesome bite. Palet cleanser of lemon sorbet is light in favour yet distinct acidic kick. A change of taste of the plum assorted give it another elevated level of balance. Main Beef cheek with fore gas . Fantastic. Bater beef cheek give off a excellent crisp in contrast with it's inner softness. Fore gas is crisp yet not overpowering fatty. Mash potatoes is semi mash with bits of unmash inside giving it an additional texture. Sauce on its on mild bitter but the combination of all 3 is perfect. House pour red flowery sweet. Spice end. Cheese mild cream cheese with assorted toppings. On the sour side. Olive was a nice combination but overall nothing impressive. Additional strong cheese give much more kick . Leathery textured and taste of cured fish. Dessert pear was lovely done. Mild sugary sweetness with fruity after taste. Pair with congac is perfect. Bringing our the oak favour of the spirit. Vanilla ice cream is smooth and rich. Almond provided is roast to smoky . Dark chocolate sauce is bringing a balance to the dishes. Overall a good experience, not to much patron is a good thing too.

I just had the chance to visit the best authentic French restaurant in Vietnam for the second time, and I have to say - it's truly something special. The first time I dined here for dinner, I was blown away by the incredible flavors and attention to detail. This time, I decided to stop in for lunch, and the experience was just as remarkable. The food is so incredibly tasty and really captures the essence of classic French cuisine. As a tourist, I consider it excellent value for money - the quality is top-notch, and the prices are very reasonable. I'll definitely be returning again❤❤❤
