The Story

About This Place

Lupin Bistrot et Vins occupies an unassuming address on Nguyễn Cừ, its entrance through a well-stocked wine retail space that gives first-time visitors pause — this is intentional, not accidental. The restaurant imports its own exclusive labels, meaning the wine list covers ground unavailable elsewhere in Thao Dien, and that pairing instinct carries through to the kitchen.

The menu moves through French bistro territory with care: duck liver terrine paired with persimmon, manila clams in a harissa cream that several reviewers single out as among the best shellfish they've encountered in Saigon, herb-crusted barramundi served over mussels and confit tomatoes. The sourdough basket earns its place mopping up sauces. Gratin dauphinois appears as a side, duck confit and beef tartare as mains, escargot and bone marrow for those working methodically through the repertoire.

Desserts finish with conviction. The baba au rhum arrives saturated through and is accompanied by a tableside pour of premium rum — diners choose the bottle. A sparkling rosé and a house limoncello have both been noted as strong closes to longer meals.

The room fills most evenings. The format — lunch 11:30 AM to 3 PM, dinner 5:30 to 11 PM daily — suits Thao Dien's rhythm of unhurried meals and late finishes. Bread arrives with harissa and butter as a paid supplement (around 80,000 VND per person) that most tables accept. The tone is bistrot rather than fine dining: attentive service, no excessive ceremony, a crowd that mixes expats familiar with the format and Vietnamese diners encountering it seriously for the first time.

I came in tonight as a solo diner very excited for French cuisine and profiteroles. That was quickly squashed by the (lack) of service I received, the misleading menu descriptions, and the owner(sommelier?) obvious disdain of my presence. This was made extra clear when another table was sat directly next to me and treated… properly. I was never informed of the specials or spoken to about any menu items. My wine was never offered to be refilled until my meal was complete, although my glass was 1 sip from empty when I received my dinner. And the “spring vegetable fricasse” that was supposed to accompany my duck confit was actually mushy peas on top of mushy potatoes. If you know French cuisine, fricasse does NOT mean purée and spring vegetables are not potatoes. Needless to say, I never ordered the profiteroles that brought me in because I was so off put by the lack of service I received. The lack that was accentuated by witnessing the table right next to me being treated well (specials offered, menu described, check-in after food and drink had been received while I was continuously ignored although half a step away) I do not recommend if you are by yourself unless you like being served baby food (mashed peas & potatoes) and treated like your presence is not wanted. Service got 2 stars because the gal offered to box up my frites.

An excellent French restaurant with delicious food and wonderful service. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the whole dining experience even more enjoyable. The rabbit leg was outstanding—tender, flavorful, and unlike anything I’ve had before. Definitely a must-try if you’re looking for authentic French cuisine. I’ll be back!

This is an absolutely great place for dinner. We loved the ambiance and foods especially the wines. Must try some white wines imported anf exclusively sold at this restaurant. Will go back next time. p/s: in my experience, the businesses that win are the ones who treat their host country with the same care and respect they treat their own families. And we feel this from the restaurant owners. Best.

I recently visited Lupin Bistro located at17 Đ. Nguyễn Cừ, An Khánh, Hồ Chí Minh 71000. A dinner, and it completely exceeded my expectations. From the warm, moody lighting to the soft music playing in the background, the ambiance was intimate and perfect for a date night or a relaxed evening with friends. We ordered the signature dish Steak au Poivre, Joue de Boeuf aux Carottes, Salade D'artichaut at Choux and Huitres and of course wines and beers and it was a culinary triumph. The flavors were incredibly well-balanced, and the dish was cooked to a velvety, melt-in-your-mouth perfection. We also tried their garlic sourdough—warm, fresh out of the oven, and bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable. Our server was highly attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and offered fantastic wine pairing recommendations. She checked on us just the right amount without being intrusive. Considering the high quality of the ingredients and the generous portion sizes, the prices were very reasonable. We felt we got fantastic value for our money. I highly recommend Lupin Bistro to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience. I’ve already booked my table to come back. Fantastic environment and atmosphere.
