The Story

About This Place

Taberna Gusti occupies a small space on Street 46 in Thao Dien, run by an Italian owner-chef whose pasta is made fresh daily — the selection rotates, so the menu shifts depending on when you visit. The interior is densely planted, with enough greenery to set it apart visually from the neighborhood's more spare, design-led openings. A compact outdoor patio extends the dining area into an informal terrace, suitable for an evening glass of wine in a setting that favors conversation over spectacle.

The kitchen focuses on two Italian staples that are rarely done well in Ho Chi Minh City: piadina and pasta. The carbonara has drawn consistent praise for its depth of flavor and premium ingredient sourcing — it reads as a kitchen priority rather than an afterthought. Piadina, the flatbread sandwich associated with Emilia-Romagna, appears on the menu alongside the pasta, giving the place a dual identity that neither Foody nor the typical Thao Dien Italian spot tends to carry.

Service runs through the owners themselves, which keeps the experience personal and responsive. The crowd is largely expat residents and repeat locals who know the street well; solo diners working through the afternoon are also a fixture, drawn by the quieter indoor setting. Music is present and can increase toward midday, though the overall atmosphere remains relaxed rather than energetic.

Pricing sits at the upper end of casual dining in the neighborhood — a known quantity for Thao Dien, and consistent with the ingredient quality on the plate. The space is small enough that occupancy shapes the mood considerably: a full outdoor table changes the energy entirely from a near-empty weekday interior. Closed Tuesdays; open 10:30 AM to 10 PM the rest of the week.

Was quite excited to try Italian food by an Italian chef. But the experience was nothing like an Italian chef would cook. Food served was cold and old. Seemed like lasagna was heated multiple times using a microwave. We were also charged extra for pasta type even though we never asked for it. When we commented, we were told we were wrong and nothing was addressed.
