Saw many reviews of this place and decided to try the fairytale menu. It was nothing short of amazing and each dish felt specially curated. We felt like every ingredient in each dish was purposeful, and was not added in for the sake of the story. We were served by Dong Duong and he was really kind to explain all the stories in detail, which really added to the storytelling experience. With such great service and food, we would really recommend this place!
Sóno - Restaurant in Thao Dien, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City
About This Place
Sóno runs dinner-only, Tuesday through Sunday, from a quiet address on Nguyễn Văn Hưởng — and the format is deliberate from the first course to the last. Chef Kien's kitchen builds each tasting menu around Vietnamese folk tales and mythology, translating cultural narrative into contemporary plating. Every dish arrives with a story attached, and the sequence is structured: palate cleansers separate the major movements, a wagyu course and duck preparation have drawn consistent praise across visits, and the final act hands diners a brush to paint their own dessert. The theatrical finish earns its place because the storytelling logic of the preceding courses sets it up.
Pricing sits at 2,000,000 VND++ for the full menu, with an optional wine pairing at 1,500,000 VND++. For Thao Dien, where the dining scene skews casual to mid-range, this places Sóno at the top end — yet returning guests consistently flag the format-to-price ratio as unusually strong. The room is small, tables are spaced generously enough to hold a private conversation on a busy Saturday, and a tight front-of-house team maintains the attentiveness a long meal at this price point requires.
The crowd runs toward couples marking occasions and groups with something to celebrate. The mood is dim and unhurried — pacing that treats dinner as an evening rather than a sitting. Among Thao Dien's growing roster of serious restaurants, Sóno occupies a specific lane: Vietnamese ingredients and culinary heritage interpreted through fine-dining technique, with enough cultural specificity to distinguish it from the neighborhood's Western-leaning options. For a single meal that reflects something particular about Vietnamese identity rather than generic international fine dining, it stands apart.
Reviews
Very aesthetically pleasing and unique. The service was great, extremely friendly staff. Thank you, Viet Hoang and Dong Duong were the best tonight! We truly appreciate you both!!
A concept-driven experience with a thoughtful narrative at its core. The storytelling element—drawing from childhood and traditional tales—is a charming touch, giving the menu a sense of identity and cohesion. The food itself is well executed and visually appealing, with flavors that are enjoyable and well balanced. While nothing particularly stands out in terms of technique or ingredients, the overall experience remains satisfying. For a tasting menu at this price point, it represents very good value. The ambience, however, leans overly dark. The wine program feels less defined, without a strong sense of identity, and there is no prominent presence of a dedicated sommelier—perhaps an intentional operational choice, reflecting a lesser emphasis on wine within the overall concept. Cocktail options are notably limited. Desserts, while visually creative, lean more toward gimmick than substance and fall short in flavor as a conclusion to the meal. An enjoyable and well-priced experience overall, with a compelling concept, though there remains room for greater refinement and definition in the details.
We opted for the Valentine’s set menu, and it was absolutely exquisite. A wonderful surprise was being treated to two complimentary cocktails per person, which were expertly crafted and paired perfectly with the meal. The ambiance is cozy, elegant, and deeply romantic. I particularly appreciated the spacious table layout; despite being a busy evening, the generous spacing ensured complete privacy for our conversation. From the moment we arrived, the "A to Z" hospitality was seamless and professional. A special mention must go to Hằng. Her storytelling was both professional and witty, adding a unique layer of charm to our evening. She truly made our night much more special. If you are looking for a place that balances luxury with a personal touch, this is it. Highly recommend!
Sono is one of the best fine dining that I have ever had. Inspired by the Vietnam folklor, the menu interpreted in excellent execution with simple taste but richness and playful when it entered your mouth. This amazing menu created by Chef Kien and his team. I can’t pick whats the best, as all the dishes are perfectly match and giving the satisfaction journey. They also had dishes thing to clear your palate before move to another part of dishes. And the final part is to painting the dessert! Thats awesome! The three of us came for the very first time as we invited by the Ambassador to be amazed. And it’s works very very well. Will definitely come back again. Thanks Sono founder and head chef, for providing this great experience. I know and I can taste the sincerity in every taste you put.
