I’ll be honest, I usually worry that places with a view like this trade flavor for aesthetics, but Chang Bistro is the real deal. The pasta was a total standout—perfectly al dente and you can tell they aren't cutting corners with the ingredients. Everything tasted incredibly fresh, which is a huge plus. Definitely not just another 'Instagram spot,' the food actually holds its own.

Chang's Bistro & Cakes - Bistro in Thao Dien, District 2, Ho Chi Minh City

About This Place
Chang's Bistro & Cakes occupies a terrace right on the river, with sightlines to Landmark 81 that make the sundowner hour genuinely worth planning around. The menu crosses more ground than most Thao Dien bistros attempt: handmade pasta—gnocchi tossed with Gorgonzola, other shapes cooked al dente with a choice of sauce—shares space with Vietnamese phở that incorporates Thai-inspired and curry notes, a combination that could easily feel unfocused but lands with enough care in the kitchen to hold together. Desserts are made in-house; the tiramisu has become the dish most likely to pull people back.
The setting is entirely outdoor, a garden terrace with plenty of greenery absorbing some of the city noise. That means midday heat and the occasional mosquito are part of the deal, and the open-air layout offers little buffer from neighbouring smokers—something a four-star reviewer flagged honestly. The trade-off is a river breeze and a skyline that most air-conditioned rooms in the neighbourhood simply cannot match. What the regulars consistently note is that the food holds up on repeat visits: portions on the smaller side, but quality stays consistent rather than drifting.
For a neighbourhood full of river-facing spots that can coast on the view, Chang's earns its 4.6 rating on food rather than scenery. The pasta programme alone—where the kitchen isn't cutting corners on ingredients and diners get meaningful choices—would be a draw even without the Landmark 81 backdrop. Tuesday is the one dark day; every other night the kitchen stays open until 11:30 PM, which makes it one of the more viable late-dinner options on this stretch of Nguyễn Văn Hưởng.
Reviews
Gorgeous river view overlooking the sunset and Landmark 81. Cozy atmosphere and a truly yummy tiramisu. Highly recommended for a relaxing evening.
Homemade pasta where you can choose both the type of pasta and the sauce. I personally love the gnocchi with Gorgonzola which really taste like in Italy 🇮🇹. The view over the river and the landmark is really nice. My only comment is that the portions are a bit small
Chang's Bistro & Cakes is an amazing spot with delicious food and incredible desserts. The place is cozy, welcoming, and perfect for a quick bite or a relaxing meal. Their cakes are fresh and full of flavor, and the service is always friendly. I go back because the quality is consistent and everything tastes homemade. Highly recommended!
Small restaurant with international dishes. The food is not tasty but the place is nice close to the river . We have taken a vietbamese style salad , carbonara pasta and phở in a non vietnamese flavor . Every plates lack of genuine flavor .
